The Time Needs Changing exhibition questioned our geo-politically controlled notions of time. The three artists in this show gave alternatives to linear time, which is currently strictly enforced by the power structures under which we live.
The works of Cao Fei, Nilbar Güreş and the Raqs Media Collective released the shackles of time, and suggest alternative and parallel paths. The exhibition presented a thought-scape that draws from three different parts of the world; China, Turkey and India. The artists explored time through drawing, video, photography, installation and new media.
Time was one of the many subjects addressed by the participants of the exhibition. Their works helped us better understand our relations with ourselves, as well as those with the world around us. Nilbar Güreş questioned masculine linear time; Cao Fei offered us greater control in a world where real and virtual intersect; and the Raqs Media Collective liberated time itself in its works that associate memory with different experiences.
The Time Needs Changing called us to appreciate time not as a series of disappearing moments, but as a way of better understanding ourselves.

Presenting an alternative to conventional time, the exhibition created a thought-scape around the idea of time through drawing, photography, video, installation and new media works by Cao Fei, Nilbar Güreş and Raqs Media Collective from China, Turkey and India. Raqs Media Collective, whose works Escapement (2009), Re-run (2013), Emperor’s Old Clothes Maquette (2016) and Hollowgram (2017) are shown as part of “The Time Needs Changing” exhibition at Pera Museum, will be talking about concepts they’ve been working on recently as well as their recent projects. The exhibition’s curator Alistair Hicks will be in conversation with Raqs following the talk.

Prof. Dr. Kaan H. Ökten, lecturer at the Department of Philosophy, Mimar Sinan Fine Art University will take an “inside look” at the existential perspectives of time and explore the domains and possibilities of being in his talk as part of The Time Needs Changing exhibition.
In a talk as part of The Time Needs Changing exhibition, artist and academic Şeref Erol will explore the idea of “time as the enabler of our facilities, or in other words, our creations or conceptualizations” through correlations drawn with formal sciences (logic, mathematics) and philosophy.

The program is a collection of stories of individuals who await the right time to live their own reality, rebel against the truths of their time, wonder about the lives being led concurrently on the far side of the world, challenge the notion that a day is but 24 hours, and believe in the healing effect of time.
Giacometti worked nonstop on his sculptures, either from nature or from memory, trying to capture the universal facial expressions.
He didn’t expect this from me. And I hadn’t expected that we would decide to get married that day, at that moment. Everything happened all of a sudden, but exactly like it was supposed to happen in our day. We thought of the idea of marriage simultaneously, we smiled simultaneously, blinking and opening our eyes in unison.
