Hide or Emerge: Papier-Mâché Masks

Pera Adult

  • May 25, 2025 / 12:00
  • June 1, 2025 / 12:00

Inspired by Marcel Dzama's world of masks, disguises and fictional characters, this workshop invites participants to step into the playful universe of papier-mâché and create their unique masks.

During the two-day workshop, the papier-mâché technique is introduced and basic shaping and painting methods are practiced. Participants get to know the material and design a personal mask that they can use to “hide” or, on the contrary, to “emerge” in a completely different way.

At the end of the detailed but fun production process, everyone leaves the workshop with a mask they shaped with their imagination.

The workshop will take place on different dates as two interconnected sessions.

Session 1 (May 25, 2025 / 12:00): Learning basic information about papier-mâché, designing the mask and creating its infrastructure, shaping the mask and determining the extra materials to be used.

Session 2 (June 1, 2025 / 12:00): It includes the steps of coloring the masks designed and left to dry in the previous session, decorating them with the selected side materials (fabric, plush, etc.) and finalizing the mask.

Instructors: Kerem Ardahan, Zeynep Kış
Capacity: 10 people
Duration: 6 hours (each session)
Fee for the two-day workshop program: 3.500 TL

The event will take place at the Pera Museum.

Memory Building Memories / Memory Room / Memento Mori

Memory Building Memories / Memory Room / Memento Mori

Each memory tells an intimate story; each collection presents us with the reality of containing an intimate story as well. The collection is akin to a whole in which many memories and stories of the artist, the viewer, and the collector are brought together. At the heart of a collection is memory, nurtured from the past and projecting into the future.

A firm believer in the idea that a collection needs to be upheld at least by four generations and comparing this continuity to a relay race, Nahit Kabakcı began creating the Huma Kabakcı Collection from the 1980s onwards. Today, the collection can be considered one of the most important and outstanding examples among the rare, consciously created, and long-lasting ones of its kind in Turkey.
