New Exhibition
Works from Yeditepe University’s Students and Alumni

Pera Museum continues to present the works of young artists and designers to its audience in collaboration with national and international educational institutions. The exhibition titled “Confrontation” brings the works of Yeditepe University students and alumni together. Presenting the production of the faculty throughout its 25 years in a transdisciplinary way, the exhibition enables the institution to face its past and present and the audiences to face the world and rediscover it in an unusual way. The exhibition is open to visitors at Pera Museum until 24 October.

Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Pera Museum, which brought the works of young artists to its audiences, in collaboration with the national and international educational institutions, hosts Yeditepe University between 7 September – 24 October. The exhibition, titled “Confrontation”, consisting of the works of departments of Plastic Arts and Painting, Graphic Design, Textile and Fashion Design, Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, Theatre, and Art and Cultural Management of the faculty, which celebrates its 25th anniversary, questions the relationship between art, design and our world today. Opening the relationships between nature-city and individual-society into discussion, the exhibition is curated by Prof. Dr. Marcus Graf, Head of the Department of Art and Cultural Management at Yeditepe University.

A pluralist and interdisciplinary exhibition

Designed as a multi-layered forum to exceed a standard students’ or alumni exhibition, “Confrontation”  takes on the topics regarding the ontological existence of art and design in a critical way. The exhibition consists of five different parts touching the concepts of nature, city, individual, society and alienation. In the exhibition, the works are not divided according to the artists' departments but placed together according to their works’ conceptional and aesthetical attributes. While paintings are placed side-by-side with posters of graphic designers, costumes and posters of theatre plays are shown together with products of gastronomy and culinary arts. The of Faculty of Fine Arts Dean Prof. Gülveli Kaya emphasizes that the common denominator of the programs using different languages is art and that the interdisciplinary transition in the exhibition unites in it. Prof. Gülveli Kaya states that, while designing the exhibition their aim was “not to shed light on the past but to use the past to look at the present, to look for the genetic codes of  our institution in the attitudes of our alumni and to come to terms with them; the main thing is to meet artists who are creative, brave, questioning, possessing an intellectual point of view, artists who love, hope, tremble, and love to live, and to search for our own future in the traces of our pasts.”

Stating that they determined the participants to provide a general perspective of the various stylistic, aesthetic and conceptual approaches to the main topics of today’s world of art and design, Curator Marcus Graf says “Artists and designers face the world with their works. Thanks to the exhibition of their work, also we gain the chance to face the world and rediscover it from unorthodox angles” and adds: “We, as members of faculty, should take our time at the exhibition to reconsider our methods of teaching as well as our ways of interacting with the environment around us. At the same time, the exhibition gives its visitors the chance to face the world from alternative and innovative points of view of contemporary artists and designers. In order to create a New Normal, we have to come up with a Different Normal, a Better Normal, and I wish that Confrontation positively contributes to this task.”

“Confrontation / Yeditepe University Faculty of Fine Arts Exhibition of Students and Graduates” exhibition can be visited at Pera Museum until 24 October 2021.

Pera Museum can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday between 10.00-19.00, and between 12.00-18.00 on Sunday. On Fridays, within the scope of “Long Friday”, all visitors between 18.00-22.00 and on Wednesdays, within the scope of “Young Wednesday”, all students can visit the museum free of charge.
