Special for Teachers: Reading a Painting

Teachers

  • January 21, 2025 / 16:00

Every painting has a message to convey. Paintings hold multiple layers of meaning, including the artist's thoughts, emotions, historical events, or ideas related to a subject. In this workshop, teachers will acquire knowledge of visual literacy - one way to be present in the moment. While exploring various works in the museum, they will learn the distinction between simply looking and truly seeing. Through this experience, they will gain the ability to view from different perspectives, develop empathy and connection, and appreciate the creativity and potential of humanity.

Instructor: Umut Nur Sungur
Capacity: 20 people
Duration:
90 minutes

The event is free of charge; reservation is required.
The event will take place at the Pera Museum.

Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel

Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel

In 1998 Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu collaborated on an obvious remake of Marcel Duchamp’s Roue de Bicyclette, his first “readymade” object. Duchamp combined a bicycle wheel, a fork and a stool to create a machine which served no purpose, subverting accepted norms of art.

Portrait of a Bullfighter (1797)

The man is depicted in three-quarters view, turning straight to the viewers with a penetrating glance. The background is grey, while the clothes, the hair, and cap are black.

Los Caprichos

Los Caprichos

It can be seen how Goya gradually and constantly investigated all the technical possibilities of creative engraving from etching to lithography.
