Based on a macabre event, the exhumation of the corpse of an unknown solider, this film brings together the strands of a complex, fast-moving story played out over 100 years in Lorraine. In it we come upon thwarted destines, brutal deaths, and exile. Through one of two characters straight out of novels, we discover the adventure of the 20th century, seen though the prism of the wars between France and Germany, and the final throes of the French nation before adopting a European identity which transcends it. This film is an investigation into the “scenes of crime”.
Objects also bear the memory of the geography to which they relate. Ceramics, with soil as their primary material, are directly linked to the land where they are produced: forging a direct relationship with earth, ceramics bear the memory of the soil where they come from.
French artist Félix Ziem is one of the most original landscape painters of the 19thcentury. The exhibition Wanderer on the Sea of Light presents Ziem as an artist who left his mark on 19th century painting and who is mostly known for his paintings of Istanbul and Venice, where the city and the sea are intertwined.
Based on similar examples by the European painters in various collections, this work is one of the portraits of Mihrimah Sultan, who was depicted rather often in the 16th century.
