The poignant and tragic tale of the bohemian poet Napoleon Lapathiotis, who lived from 1888 to 1944… As a homosexual, drug addict, and communist, Lapathiotis caused controversy in the society of Athens, especially within the social class from which he hailed. He was one of the most iconic figures of his era, not only due to the profound impact of his poems that bore the imprints of his life but also for the scandals he sparked.
While Paula Rego belatedly was recognised as one of the leading feminist pioneers of her age, little has been written about her exploration of fluid sexuality. Indeed the current of sado-masochism in her drawings and paintings, has tended to encourage an understanding as a classic clash between the patriarchy and exploited women.
Józef Brandt harboured a fascination for the history of 17th century Poland, and his favourite themes included ballistic scenes and genre scenes before and after the battle proper –all and sundry marches, returns, supply trains, billets and encampments, patrols, and similar motifs illustrating the drudgery of warfare outside of its culminating moments.
