The film by Theo Angelopoulos, regarded as the pinnacle of New Greek Cinema, follows a theater troupe traveling across Greece from 1939 to 1952. While they stage the pastoral folk tale "Golfo," the actors live the Aeschylus' Oresteia Trilogy drama in their own lives. The traumatic history of Greece intertwines with the private lives of the group members.
Józef Brandt harboured a fascination for the history of 17th century Poland, and his favourite themes included ballistic scenes and genre scenes before and after the battle proper –all and sundry marches, returns, supply trains, billets and encampments, patrols, and similar motifs illustrating the drudgery of warfare outside of its culminating moments.
